Eight Democratic Party candidates who claim to be “transgender” or “non-binary” have been elected during the US midterms – and are mainly men who claim to be women.
One, a man who calls himself Sarah McBride, was re-elected after becoming the first “transgender” member of Congress in Delaware in 2024, while the other seven won or were re-elected to state house seats.
They are Leigh Finke in Minnesota, Bentley Hudgins in Georgia, Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford in Wisconsin, Allison Montgomery in Alabama, Jaelynn Scott in Washington, Joanna Whaley in Michigan, and Zooey Zephyr in Montana.
Leigh Finke
Mr Finke, 45, is a member of the Democrat-affiliated Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, a former journalist, and claims to be a “mother-of-two” even though he is a biological male.
He was first elected to the Minnesota House in 2022, and wrote the state’s “trans refuge” legislation which made it a so-called sanctuary for gender-deluded people who have been refused genital mutilating procedures or drugs in other states.
Bentley Hudgins
Hudgins, 32, claims to be “non-binary”, appears to be half-Japanese, is deaf, heavily tattooed, and has been homeless.
It is unclear whether Hudgins, a far-left democratic socialist, is male or female.
Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford
Mr Martinez-Rutherford, 56, is a male former evangelical pastor who claims to have “transitioned” into a “transgender woman” while in his 30s.
In 2023 he was elected as a member of the Madison Common Council, and successfully launched an initiative for the “transgender pride” flag to be flown over City Hall.
Sarah McBride
Mr McBride, 36, is a male far-left activist and ordained Presbyterian elder claims to be a woman, and was first elected to the Delaware Senate in 2020, before switching to the House of Representatives four years later.
He has advocated for “transgender” people to be allowed in the military, and is responsible for state laws banning discrimination on the basis of so-called gender identity.
Allison Montgomery
Mr Montgomery, 32, is a male software engineer who claims to be a “transgender woman”, and says he is a practicing Christian.
He campaigned on a platform which included opposition to AI data centres, and ending corruption.
Jaelynn Scott
Mr Scott, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, became the first black male who claims to be a woman to be elected in the US after winning a Washington State House District in Seattle.
He ran on a platform of “trans” rights and taxing billionaires.
Joanna Whaley
Mr Whaley, 38, a male former evangelical megachurch pastor who claims to have “survived” 15 years of homosexual conversion therapy, also campaigned against data centres, and was endorsed by Mr McBride before winning his Michigan state legislature seat.
Zooey Zephyr
Mr Zephyr, 38, is a male who claims to be a “bisexual trans woman”, and was first elected to the Montana House in 2022. He is married to a journalist named Erin Reed, who is also a male who claims to be a woman.
During his time in office he has campaigned against Republican efforts to prevent minors being given hormones and puberty blocking drugs, which are dangerous and have irreversible effects.
