A Pakistani kebab shop worker has been charged with murder after his three-month-old son died of severe internal injuries in a Brisbane hospital.
Uneed Ullah, 28, brought the infant to Ipswich hospital on October 1, but the baby was transferred to the Queensland Children’s Hospital due to the severity of his injuries and was put on life support, but died on Tuesday afternoon.
Ullah, who was the only one home when the baby injured, was then arrested and charged with one count of murder – domestic violence against a child, and his case was briefly mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday, and adjourned until October 26.
Detective Inspector Michael Manago said on Wednesday that police had been alerted by hospital staff due to the “nature” of the child’s injuries, but said he was “not going to comment” about what allegedly caused the child’s death, 10 News reported.
He also said the Ullah and the boy’s mother were in a relationship at the time of the child’s death, and had minimal family support in Australia.
“The nature and dynamic of their relationship will form a part of the investigation moving forward,” he said.
“The boy’s mother is extremely upset, she’s struggling, but we’re offering all the support we can. Our thoughts are with this young boy’s family and their friends in what is an unimaginably difficult time for them.
“Any death is devastating but the death involving a young and vulnerable member of the community is particularly tragic.”
The father was not known to police, and was “surprised” when he was arrested, 7News reported.
According to Ullah’s social media profiles he worked in a kebab shop in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, and got married in December.
He and the child’s mother are believed to have been living in an apartment in Ipswich, where police allege the murder occurred.
