An immigrant toilet cleaner has been charged after allegedly assaulting a student at a school where he was working in the Adelaide Hills.
South Australia Police said they were called to the school on April 27, and arrested a 30-year-old man in the eastern suburbs later that day, charging him with aggravated indecent assault.
He was released on bail to appear in the Mount Barker Magistrates Court on July 2, and police said an investigation was ongoing, with support being provided to the school community by the Department for Education.
The man, who has been stood down, had worked for the cleaning company for two years and passed all police checks, his employer told 7News.
He was on a working visa, and was hired to change sanitary bins for the company, which has government school cleaning contracts across the state. His nationality has not been revealed.
Letters have now been sent to parents at other school saying “an external contractor who attended our site has been arrested and charged with aggravated indecent assault of a child. The individual was employed by an external service provider and did not work with children and young people. This incident does not involve any students at our site”.
The charges shocked parents and other members of the community, with one elderly man saying: “I’m disgusted, absolutely. They’ve got to be thoroughly checked.”
“Horrific, I couldn’t really comprehend it myself,” a local woman said.
