An aboriginal rapper who performed at anti-Australian “invasion day” protests has been charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend in Logan, Queensland.
Ronald Cora, 37, known as MC Triks, was arrested at home on Rowanda Street in Slacks Creek, south of Brisbane, after police found Djuarn Baker-Adams, 27, unresponsive when they arrived at about 12.30am on Wednesday in response to reports of an assault.
Queensland Police officers and paramedics performed CPR, but the Woody Point woman was declared deceased at the scene at about 1am.
Cora was later charged with one count each of murder (domestic violence offence) and contravention of a domestic violence order, and refused police bail to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said early investigations suggested Ms Baker-Adams died of asphyxiation, and said Cora had called emergency services.
He also confirmed the pair had been in a relationship which had ended, and that police had been in contact with the victim.
“Within the last 10 days police did have contact with this woman in relation to domestic and family violence-related issues,” he said.
“I am satisfied police had taken the appropriate actions and that support had been offered to this woman as well.
“The reason that she was at that particular location, is still under investigation, but it will certainly form an important part of our ongoing investigation.”
Cora, who also went by the rap name Intrikit Ways, features in a music video called We Still Right Here performing at an “invasion day” rally in Brisbane, where he called Australia “First nations land”.
The clip features militant aboriginal protesters holding signs saying “warriors of the aboriginal resistance”, “always was, always will be aboriginal land”, “fighting terrorism since 1788”, and “White Australia has a black history”.
A social media post by the State Library of Queensland from 2017 stated that Cora “began song writing as a contemporary healing process in response to racism”.
