Nationalist activist calls for Ben Roberts-Smith to be freed as he’s mobbed by reporters

Nationalist activist Joel Davis has spoken out in support of war hero Ben Roberts-Smith after facing court in Sydney over Telegram posts and messages.

Mr Davis, 31, appeared in the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday on 10 charges of “using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend”, after being released on bail last week following 133 days in solitary confinement after being remanded in custody.

He was initially charged with one count of the same charge in relation to a post allegedly urging his Telegram followers to “rhetorically rape” federal MP Allegra Spender in response to her saying he and other members of the now-disbanded National Socialist Network should be jailed for a Jewish lobby protest.

But the NSW Supreme Court heard during Mr Davis’s successful bail application on Thursday that nine new charges were added on March 20 in relation to messages allegedly found by police on his phone after his arrest at a Bondi café on November 20.

Mr Davis is yet to enter any pleas, and Magistrate Greg Grogin set his next court date for early June.

The prominent activist, who is banned from using social media as part of his bail conditions, was then swarmed by journalists after leaving court and asked about his case.

“I don’t want to talk about my case, but I want to say something about this Ben Roberts-Smith situation, which I think is an emblematic microcosm of everything wrong with this country,” Mr Davis said.

“What kind of country prosecutes its war heroes for defending his brothers-in-arms. Free Ben Roberts-Smith.”

Roberts-Smith did not apply for bail in the online bail court on Wednesday, and will also face court again in June, meaning he will spend at least two months behind bars, likely in isolation due to his high profile, unless his legal team make a successful application for bail.
