A group of masked thugs armed with machetes have stormed a McDonald’s in Adelaide, leaving some staff too terrified to return to work.
The intruders, who have not been described by South Australia Police, ran into the fast food restaurant in Munno Para at about 11pm on Saturday night, jumping counters, chasing two men into the toilets and smashing a door.
The four thugs then fled the scene in a stolen black Holden Commodore which was found damaged and dumped nearby, The Advertiser reported.
Two teenage girls of African appearance, who asked to be be kept anonymous out of fear for their safety, told 9News the men were “really tall” and “came in and started wielding a machete at everyone … they jumped the counters and went around the whole kitchen”.
“Everyone just ran in different directions,” one of them said.
“There’s pretty much nothing you can do other than just fear for your life and hope that you come out alive in a situation like that.”
Workers at the McDonald’s are so shaken up by the incident some are considering refusing to come back in.
The Shop Workers Union is now calling for “safety barriers” to be erected over counters in all McDonald’s outlets, and are conducting a safety audit of the Munno Para store.
“It’s not on, and it’s not good enough, and more can be done to keep [McDonald’s employees] safe, such as proper security screening and lockable doors,” said union spokesperson Josh Peak.
South Australia Police said the group caused minor damage and no injuries were reported.
