An Indian man has been charged with allegedly murdering his wife at their home in the Adelaide suburb of Northfield on Sunday night.
Vikrant Thakur, 42, faced Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday accused of killing Supriya Thakur, 36, but did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
A prosecutor told the court 16 weeks were needed to finalise the charges and obtain evidence, including DNA, post-mortem results, crime scene photographs and phone analysis, and Magistrate Patrick Hill adjourned the case until April, The Advertiser reported.
Emergency services were called to the home at about 8.30pm after reports of a domestic assault, and found Ms Thakur unconscious on arrival. Police officers performed CPR but were unable to save her, and arrested Mr Thakur at the scene.
Concerned friend Ella Butler arrived at the house on Monday after not hearing from Ms Thakur, and told 7News she was a “really beautiful mother, a really good friend, a dedicated wife, and a dedicated worker”, saying she worked 80 hours a week.
Ms Thakur was studying to be a nurse, and had moved to Australia eight years ago. The couple have a teenage son who is believed to have been home at the time of the alleged incident.
One neighbour, Maddie Stephens, 18, said was in the front garden at the time of the alleged incident but didn’t hear anything, while Nikhil Bhavsar said nothing similar had ever happened in the neighbourhood.
“It’s shocking, we were not aware until this morning it was a [alleged] murder,” said Mr Bhavsar, who would often see family members walking their dog early in the morning.
“We knew it was something serious but we weren’t allowed to go outside or anything.
“The woman was quite nice, my wife would speak to her for a couple of minutes every now and then, but usually it was just ‘hi, hello’.”
Another woman who lives close by, Megha Patel, also said she did not hear anything, and that it was a quiet street with “no issues and no drama”.
