Indian doctor charged with rape and sexual assault in Brisbane

An Indian immigrant cosmetic doctor and general practitioner has been charged with rape, sexual assault and other offences in Brisbane.

Venkata Ramesh Nandamuri, 49, who worked at the Upper Kedron Medical Centre in the city’s northwest was listed to apply for bail in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday but withdrew the application and remains behind bars.

He has been charged with one count of rape, one count of sexual assault, one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice, and three counts of breach bail, The Courier Mail reported.

The rape charges relates to an alleged August 20 incident, the sexual assault charge to August 21, one breach of bail allegedly occurred between October 18 and November 10, and two on November 9, while the pervert the course of justice offence also allegedly took place between October 18 and November 10.

The revelations comes after Dr Nandamuri was banned from treating women by the Health Ombudsman on November 14.

A statement from the health watchdog at the time confirmed he must not have contact with female patients, must not practice as a health practitioner in any locations not approved by the Health Ombudsman, and that female patients wanting to book appointments with him must be informed that they cannot, and he cannot provide that information personally.

According to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Dr Nandamuri graduated with a medical degree from the NTR University of Health Sciences in India in 2001, and was first registered to work in Australia in 2007.

An online profile states that he speaks Telugu and Hindi in addition to English, specialises in skin cancer and cosmetic medicine, underwent GP training in Queensland where he has worked for more than a decade, and has worked in emergency departments around Australia.

Dr Nandamuri will face Brisbane Magistrates Court again on December 19.
