White Australia leader Thomas Sewell granted bail over clash with far-left extremists

Thomas Sewell, the leader of Australia’s largest nationalist group, White Australia, has been granted bail more than two months after he was locked up over an alleged clash with far-left extremists in Melbourne.

Mr Sewell, 32, applied for release in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Wednesday on 25 charges relating to the alleged fight at so-called Camp Sovereignty on August 31.

Justice James Elliott ruled on the application on Thursday morning, granting bail strict conditions including not entering Melbourne’s CBD or going within 200 metres of Kings Domain, the site of the illegal aboriginal encampment, reporting to a police station three times a week, not leaving Victoria, and not contacting co-accused or witnesses.

He said the prosecution had not proved Mr Sewell was an unacceptable risk to the community, which would be “diminished” by the bail conditions as his alleged “offending is related to being in public places with others”, ABC News reported.

Speaking to the media after walking out of court, Mr Sewell told reporters he was glad to feel the sun on his face after “staring at a concrete wall for 72 days”, said he intended to comply with his bail conditions, and that he felt the Supreme Court was fair.

When asked if he had any reflections while in custody, Mr Sewell said: “I’m going to keep fighting for Australia. Australia is at a crossroads for its identity, and we believe that the Australian people should be sovereign in this country, not the third world.

“That’s what we’re fighting for, we’re fighting for the future of Australia’s identity, for its national spirit, for our race and civilisation. Hail Australia.”

During the interview Mr Sewell was forced to speak over chanting by far-left extremists who were allowed to scream abuse outside the courthouse while police watched on.

“Look, there’s people who hate Australia, they wave aboriginal flags, they wave Palestinian flags, but ultimately they just hate Australia, so those who fight for Australia are going to have to hear this kind of nonsense from these scumbags, it’s not going to stop us,” he said when asked about the disruption.

On Wednesday Mr Sewell was filmed holding up a piece of paper with his group’s website “WhiteAustralia.org” written on it, and waving as he was taken into the court in handcuffs, and his barrister Dermot Dann KC argued that his client should be granted bail as the case could drag on for as long as two years.

Mr Sewell was arrested on September 2 and was refused bail in Melbourne Magistrates Court three days later after Magistrate Donna Bakos said the public needed protection from “hateful speech” and called the incident an “unprovoked [alleged] attack on a sacred site”.

He is one of 15 members of the National Socialist Network charged over the alleged brawl at “Camp Sovereignty”, which was being used by far-left extremists to attack March for Australia attendees returning to their cars after the anti-immigration rally.

Last month Mr Sewell, representing himself in court, beat a charge of “offensive behaviour” over a 2023 march through the Victorian city of Ballarat, successfully arguing that the demonstration was political, and not offensive.

His political organisation, White Australia, is in the process of registering as a party with the Australian Electoral Commission and state equivalents, and plans to run candidates in elections in NSW, Victoria and in the 2028 federal election.
