Melbourne’s road and rail networks have been thrown into chaos after a rogue truck driver hit two different bridges in the inner city.
The truck carrying heavy machinery first hit the Alexandra Avenue bridge in Cremorne at about 2.30pm on Wednesday, knocking an excavator’s bucket onto the road and blocking traffic.
The same driver then struck a rail overpass at the outbound entrance of Citylink at Batman Avenue and Punt Road at about 3.15pm, bringing trains on the Sandringham, Frankston, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines to a halt while Metro Trains assessed the damage, 9News reported.
The truck became stuck under the bridge and the impact severed the hydraulics of the arm of the excavator, and traffic banked up behind the truck then had to reverse off the off-ramp so the truck be extracted from under the bridge.
The truck driver has spoken to Victoria Police and is expected to be slapped with infringement notices.
