A young woman has been speared in the head in a remote aboriginal community in the Northern Territory.
NT Police said they received a report that a woman, 18, had been speared by a man known to her in Angurugu, a small community on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, just after midday on Sunday.
Police and paramedics rushed to the scene and found the woman conscious with the spear still embedded in her head.
She was airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital by Care Flight helicopter, and is now in a serious but stable condition.
The alleged offender is still on the run, and police said investigations were ongoing.
In 2015 two men aged 19 and 29 were speared to death in Angurugu during a brawl between 50 to 60 people which erupted after a dispute between two women and was related to a family feud.
Five years later a new $14.5 million police station opened in the community of about 900 people, but residents complained no officers were stationed there permanently and said police often took hours to arrive from Alyangula, 20 kilometres away.
