Woman charged over bizarre alleged ‘cash for demerit points’ scheme

A Queensland woman has been charged over an alleged “cash for demerit points” scheme in which she had 1,266 traffic infringements transferred into her name.

Police allege she advertised on social media offering to take fines and demerit points in exchange for payment between 2022 and June this year, resulting in 1,150 demerits being recorded against her licence, along with about $620,000 in fines.

The 27-year-old from Woodridge, Logan, was arrested on Thursday and was remanded in custody after facing Brisbane Magistrates Court charged with fraud.

Queensland Police Detective Superintendent Craig McGrath, Commander of the Financial and Cyber Crime Group, said the woman allegedly profited from the scheme while drivers who were supposed to be banned kept their licences.

“Many of those allegedly using these services should have had their licences suspended but were instead able to continue driving on our roads,” he said.

“The demerit point system is in place to make our roads safer and drivers accountable, and this scheme can put other road users at risk.

“Police take this offending seriously and anyone involved can expect to be identified and prosecuted”.

The alleged fraudster will appear in court again on September 28.
