Black ex-con charged with murder after allegedly shooting his White girlfriend in the face

Greensboro, North Carolina – A White woman has passed away from her injuries after reports say she was found shot in the face in her bedroom. For the crime, police arrested a Black ex-convict alleged to be her “boyfriend,” who now faces charges of first-degree murder.

According to reports, officers with the Greensboro police department responded last Tuesday to a residence on Niagara Street, where they discovered the victim, 28-year-old Brianna Laray Lee, suffering from a “severe” gunshot wound to her face in the home’s upstairs bedroom.

Lee—who is White—was transported to the hospital in critical condition. She would succumb to her injuries days later.

Law enforcement would apprehend 27-year-old career criminal Cheavez Ajee Clapp, who initially faced charges of attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Those charges were elevated to first-degree murder, however, upon news of Lee’s passing on Saturday.

Clapp—who is Black—is alleged to have been in a domestic relationship with the victim. Audio from the 911 call initiated by Clapp purports to show the Black man tearfully requesting help and claiming that Lee had been walking “on the street” before suddenly entering the home with a preexisting gunshot wound.

Clapp and Lee were described as having a “domestic relationship.” An analysis of social media revealed they had been cohabitating and raising two children at the time of her gunshot murder. Collage: Justice Report, Facebook.

Dispatchers could then be heard providing first aid tips, including how to seal the wound on her face and stop bleeding until first responders arrived.

However, police suspected that Lee’s wounds were likely an act of domestic violence, taking him into custody. No further details about a potential motive were made available.

While little is known about the suspect, an independent Justice Report investigation revealed Clapp had faced criminal charges and convictions years before the alleged murder of his White girlfriend. A prolific career criminal, Clapp had been in and out of court on charges of larcenyrobberyassault with a deadly weapon, illegal firearm and drug possession, and traffic offenses dating back to 2014.

Despite many of these charges stemming from the rock-ribbed Republican state of North Carolina, courtroom databases indicate that local judges had voluntarily dismissed several of them.

Like many Black men, Clapp appeared to have sexually fetishized White women, using his Facebook account to promote interracial relationships. An analysis of both social media profiles revealed that the two had been openly living together for some time and had been raising two mixed-race children.

“Happy mothers day 💓 Brianna Lee,” he said in a Facebook post. “You kill this being a mother thing.”

Both the victim and the accused would regularly compliment each other on Facebook, giving the illusion that their interracial relationship was a picture-perfect affair. Photo: Facebook.

Court records indicate that Clapp’s next court appearance is scheduled for December 4. Meanwhile, Lee’s family is still reeling from the sudden loss, issuing a heartfelt statement that remembered her as a loved one who “cherished” her two young sons.

“Brianna Laray Lee was a beautiful mother, daughter, and sister who brought joy to all those who knew her. She loved her two young boys more than anything in this world,” read the statement issued to WFMYNews 2.

“We are deeply heartbroken and saddened by a senseless act of violence that ultimately took her life from us too soon. We ask at this time to keep our family and her children in your thoughts and prayers,” it continued.

The city of Greensboro, North Carolina, has remained a bubbling cauldron of racial violence that often leaves the White community without homeslivelihoods, or loved ones. According to the US Census Bureau, only 41.8% of all those currently living in “The Gate City” are registered as White, compared to a skyrocketing Black population of 43.1%.

Black gang criminality is believed to be so bad that certain Sheetz convenience stores were forced to deploy guard dog units to curtail a surge in “criminal activity.” The move was initiated after three Black men were implicated in the late December killing of off-duty Greensboro police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix.

According to reports, Nix drew his last breath when police say three Black men opened fire as they planned to steal $83 worth of beer from a Greensboro Sheetz location, adding his name to a laundry list of Black-on-White slayings in recent memory.

Despite this near-constant stream of death, politicians in North Carolina appear little interested in providing lasting solutions. Instead, the North Carolina House of Representatives infamously huddled together in May of 2024 to adopt the “Standing up to Hate and Leading with Our Moral Principals Act,” aka the SHALOM Act, to bipartisan applause.

The controversial legislation seeks to shield the state’s marginal Jewish community from criticism over Israel’s bloody response to October 7th, primarily by adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, which asserts that even mild critique of Jews or their interests is an “antisemitic act” warranting hate classifications.

Meanwhile, so-called “senseless acts of violence” linked to a Black suspect have become commonplace all across North Carolina. Earlier in the month, 47-year-old Donald James Krajnak, a White father of three, was shot dead in a Salisbury, North Carolina parking lot. For the crime, police arrested Alexus Burshell Bost—a Black woman—and charged her with 1st-degree murder and a slew of related offenses.

A few days earlier, the community was hit with another tragedy, this time in the so-called “accidental” shooting death of 20-year-old Skyler Patillo. Police claim that 21-year-old Triston Spencer—who is Black—may have “mishandled” a firearm inside a student housing complex, which discharged and killed the White woman. He has since been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is being held on $150,000 bail.

In June, a White woman in Greensboro was brutally killed by what police say was a Black man setting up an ambush using Facebook Marketplace. Reports state that the suspect, 31-year-old Troy Marquise Gillard, shot his victim, 67-year-old Kathryn Garton Holmes, in the neck, paralyzing her. He was then said to have stripped her of her wedding band and engagement ring before fleeing the agreed-upon meetup site.
