A young Sudanese man has died in hospital after rival African gangs fought a pitched battle outside a party in an Airbnb in Logan, south of Brisbane.
Jongkuch Peter Kur Jongkuch Achieu, from Redbank Plains, was found with severe head injuries on Orchard Avenue in Bahrs Scrub after the violent brawl, which erupted at about 2.15am on July 27 at the short-term rental on nearby Discovery Boulevard.
Achieu, 21, was given CPR at the scene and rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition, but died on the weekend.
On Monday he was identified by Biong Community Global, which said in a statement that Achieu’s death was a “loss felt profoundly by all who knew and loved him”.
Queensland Police have not made any arrests over the brawl, which erupted when a group of African males armed with knives got out of a car and gatecrashed the party being held inside the Airbnb property.
Footage from 7News shows broken pieces of furniture strewn across the street, multiple cars with smashed windscreens, and a nearby park cordoned off with police tape the morning after the brawl.
Hooded teenagers were also caught on CCTV running through backyards and homes after the fight.
Logan Crime Group Detective Inspector Ian Galpin last week described the clash as an “all-out brawl”, and confirmed that the partygoers and both groups involved in the clash were African.
“Both parties, the initial group and the second group that arrived, are both of African descent,” he said.
“There seem to be two distinct groups who came into conflict with one another.”
Det Insp Galvin also confirmed that multiple knives were found at the scene, and several other people suffered stab wounds, but said he could not comment on whether Achieu was known to police.
