Driver missing after horror seven-truck crash on NSW highway

Two firefighters in yellow gear spray water at a burning wreck with scattered debris and containers.

A truck driver is missing after a seven-truck crash that caused a massive explosion and fire and shut down the Hume Highway in New South Wales.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the road was closed in both directions and one driver remains unaccounted for after the incident just after 5am on Tuesday near Breadalbane in the state’s Southern Tablelands.

Two semi-trailers are believed to have collided and then slammed into five other trucks at a roadside rest stop.

NSW Ambulance treated six male drivers for minor injuries at the scene, and two were then taken to Goulburn hospital for mandatory testing.

“One truck was carrying eight tonnes of butane cans, another was transporting resin, a third contained memory foam and a fourth was packed with alcohol, fuelling the resulting fire and explosions,” FRNSW said.

A 300-metre exclusion zone was set up around the crash site ands traffic is being diverted through Canberra via the Federal and Barton Highways.

Seven fire tracks and about 40 firefighters were deployed to the scene, including two HAZMAT vehicles, while Police, Ambulance, Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Traffic Management crews were also involved in the emergency operation.
