An African man has been charged over an alleged attack on a home in western Sydney where a grenade was thrown inside and shots fired at the house.
NSW Police Raptor Squad officers under Strike Force Calvin arrested 19-year-old Nyasha Shoko in Austral at about 10.15am on Tuesday, and he was refused bail to face court on Wednesday on seven charges.
Police alleged two men tried to force their way into a home on Loura Street in Tallawong with a sledgehammer at about 4.40am on November 27.
One of the men allegedly tried to shoot at the home but his firearm malfunctioned and he threw a stun grenade inside. The pair then allegedly went to their vehicle to get another gun and fired two shots at the house.
They allegedly fled in an Mazda CX5 and then ran off on foot after crashing the SUV on Ashburton Crescent, and police allegedly found a live grenade, two firearms – one loaded, a magazine, a mobile phone and other items including bleach and clothing during a search of the allegedly stolen vehicle.
Officers from the Bomb and Rescue Squad and Australian Defence Force personnel were called to safely remove the grenade, police said on Wednesday.
The Dog Squad allegedly found the men’s clothing, including a balaclava, hooded jumper, pants and gloves, after tracking the men to First Ponds Creek.
Shoko was charged with “fire firearm at dwelling-house disregard for safety”, “special aggravated break & enter & commit serious indictable offence-weapon”, two counts of “possess loaded firearm public place”, “possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit”, “drive conveyance taken without consent of owner”, and “participate criminal group contribute criminal activity”.
He will face Liverpool Local court on Wednesday.
