An Indian international student who was working as a truck driver has been killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash near Perth.
Arshpreet Singh’s white Volvo cement truck crashed through a barrier on Great Eastern Highway at Wooroloo and burst into flames at 8.15am on Thursday.
The 23-year-old was trapped inside and was dead when emergency services arrived, The West Australian reported.
Photos of the crash site show the truck broken in two and overturned on the side of the road, with the cabin charred from a fire investigators believe started inside the fuel tank.
Mr Singh’s death was the 93rd on Western Australia’s roads so far this year, the highest number at this point of the year in more than a decade, and just hours later a motorcyclist died from injuries suffered in a collision with an SUV on May 28.
Local Indian media reported that Mr Singh was from Ram Khara Village in Tarn Taran, Punjab, and had come to Australia to study.
“After hearing the news of his death, the family members in the village are in a state of grief and have demanded that the Government bring the body to India as soon as possible,” Sea7 Australia wrote.
“The Punjabi community in Australia has also expressed grief.”
