Woman, 22, gang-raped inside police station in Papua New Guinea

A young woman has allegedly been gang-raped by three police officers inside a station in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, while their sergeant turned a blind eye.

The horrific alleged attack took place at the Saraga Police Station on Tuesday after a couple were arrested and officers allegedly tried to extort money out of them, police said.

The alleged victim’s boyfriend was released and the woman, 22, was allegedly gang-raped by two constables and an auxiliary officer after refusing their advances, the Post-Courier reported.

The constables, Jerry Aura and Danny Karaio, have been arrested on suspicion of rape, while their supervising officer, Sergeant Karl Yori, is being charged with related offences.

Commissioner of Police, David Manning said police were still looking for the auxiliary member, and that all police resources were being committed to the apprehension and prosecution of the alleged offenders.

“Within hours of the report of this horrific incident, two Constables and their supervising officer were arrested and are now detained at the Boroko Police Station,” he said.

“It is alleged that, on Tuesday, 3 June 2025, three members from the Saraga Police Post detained a man and a woman under false pretenses. The man and woman were subsequently convoyed to Saraga Police Post, where it is alleged the officers attempted to extort money.

“Following the release of the man, it is alleged that two constables and an auxiliary member raped the woman. It is further alleged that the Officer-in-Charge knew what occurred and did nothing to stop the men who were under his command.”

Commissioner Manning said Australian Federal Police advisors were assisting investigators.

“Those involved in criminal offences are a minority of personnel that tarnish the reputation of the force and the majority of hardworking police throughout the country,” he said.

“A police station is a safe place and anyone being brought in must be protected and treated with respect and dignity. A completely disgusting and dangerous criminal act is how I describe it.”
