Private schoolboy, 17, calls police after classmates called him ‘fat’ and doused him with beer

A student at one of Australia’s most prestigious private schools has complained to police after allegedly being called “fat” and doused with drinks at a gathering in a Sydney park.

Footage of the alleged incident shows the 17-year-old from The Scots College being slapped on the back and sprayed with beer as he walked through a “human tunnel” with a flag in bushland near Woollahra Golf Club in Rose Bay in the city’s eastern suburbs, while other clips feature teenage boys wrestling and drinking.

The alleged Saturday afternoon incident is understood to have been part of a school tradition for boys in Years 10 to 12, and a local resident said students had been drinking in the area for years and taking part in loud chants such as “Scots boys are on fire, chug chug chug”.

The boy later told NSW Police that he was verbally abused and called a “fat fuck”, and police said they have so far interviewed four boys aged 16 to 17 who will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act, with no charges laid.

The boy’s mother alleged her son was “lured” into going to the park and told “all boys needed to be there to show support”, but that he was then “set upon”.

“They handed him a flag and they ridiculed him. Poured beer over his hair, pulled his shirt, the beer was burning his eyes, all his shoulders … just absolutely humiliated him, laughing and taunting him, calling him disgusting names that I don’t think he will ever forget,” she told 2GB earlier this week.

Dr Ian Lambert, Principal at the $46,000/year school, wrote a letter to teachers on Monday that was also read out on radio.

“These boys were under the supervision of their parents, and I question why they were permitted to gather in such a way with large amounts of alcohol present and being consumed by boys under the age of 18. Behaviour of this nature is never tolerated at Scots,” he wrote.

“The conduct that is visible in the video is completely unacceptable and stands in direct opposition to our values. I am disappointed and disgusted. The fact that this occurred off campus and outside school hours does not lessen its seriousness.”

Police said in a statement no injuries were suffered during the alleged incident.

On Tuesday The Sydney Morning Herald, which like 2GB is owned by media giant Nine Entertainment, condemned the incident in an editorial describing it as “bullying”, blaming a “culture of privileged entitlement”, and calling for the behaviour to be “properly investigated and punished”.
