Teen allegedly stabbed as aboriginal violence mars Royal Darwin Show

A 15-year-old male is fighting for life in hospital after allegedly being stabbed during a fight between aboriginal teenagers at the Royal Darwin Show on the weekend.

The event, which is supposed to be family-friendly, descended into chaos at about 8.20pm on Saturday night as two groups of aboriginals allegedly attacked each other in Sideshow Alley.

Paramedics rushed the injured teen to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition, NT News reported.

His alleged attacker fled the scene but was arrested a short time later at a home in Palmerston, and has been charged with “recklessly endanger life” and “possess, carry, use a controlled weapon”, Northern Territory Police said.

An 18-second video of the alleged incident shows onlookers screaming as blood pours from the alleged victim’s chest following a fight between the aboriginal males, who police said were known to each other.

Country Liberal Party Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro addressed the alleged stabbing in a post on social media on Sunday where she blamed rampant violent crime in the NT on the previous Labor government’s weak policies.

“Over the past few weeks, apologists have come out against our focus on reducing crime. Let’s be clear, our current reality is the result of years of the former government’s soft, offender-first policies,” she wrote.

“This is not normal. It is not acceptable. And under my government, it will not be tolerated. This week in Parliament, we will be changing the Youth Justice Act to end the former government’s failed catch-and-release scheme.

“We expect the usual offender apologists to criticise our efforts, but they should look Territorians in the eye and say that kids witnessing senseless violence at a family show is okay.”
