A man has been fired from his job in Perth for “misgendering” a biological male colleague who claims to be “non-binary” by calling him “he” instead of “they”.
The sacked 63-year-old, who was in a high-paying job, introduced his younger male co-worker by his biologically correct pronoun during a leadership training course in February, but apologised after being corrected by another colleague.
The gender-deluded man had earlier asked his older colleague to refer to him as “they”, and had his preferred pronoun written on his name badge, The West Australian reported.
The pair worked together without incident for the rest of that day, acting as partners in role-playing scenarios and sitting next to each other, but the 63-year-old was later told a formal complaint had been filed and he needed to apologise in writing.
The man refused, saying he could not be compelled to use a preferred pronoun, which upset many of his younger co-workers who were in their 20s and sided with the worker who claims to be “non-binary” – a radical gender ideology term for someone who denies biological sex.
The company began an investigation as a result of the backlash, and eventually dismissed the 63-year-old, who then took his employer to the Fair Work Commission for wrongful dismissal, telling a hearing if one person had a right to use an arbitrary pronoun then another person had the same right not to.
After being told he risked facing serious social consequences if the case went to open court, the parties came to a confidential settlement.
Details of the matter remained confidential and are not publicly available, but details have since emerged after lawyers began discussing the case and its legal implications.
