Nepalese student jailed for raping woman he lured with fake job ad in Sydney

A Nepalese graduate student has been jailed for raping a 19-year-old woman he lured to an out-of-use office building in Sydney with a fake “females only” job ad.

Rameshwar Prasad Singh, 33, faced the NSW District Court last week where he was sentenced to three years’ jail with a non-parole period of one year and nine months, and is set to walk free in May due to time already spent in custody.

Singh was arrested in August 2024 while on a temporary graduate visa, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual intercourse without consent and was given a 25% sentencing discount, news.com.au reported.

Singh posted a job at on Nepalese classifieds app Kaam Kotha stating “Jobs for females only in Ashfield. Job role: fixing up small things and help interior designer. Payrate: $29 hour cash”, according to court documents.

When his victim responded Singh asked if she was available at 8pm, and met her at Ashfield Mall after asking her what method of transport she was taking and saying he was “worried” about her travelling at night as a female.

He then led the 19-year-old through an underground car park and into an elevator to the third floor where she noticed the lights were off and “began to feel things were not right”.

She asked Singh where the other employees were, and he told her they were starting at 8.30, and she was early because she was new, and the woman called a friend who told her to leave but stay on the call.

The victim told Singh her sister was sick and she had to go, but he followed her into a lift, snatched her phone and hung up, and then when the elevator stopped on a different floor he pushed her out and raped her.

The victim later told police she thought she was “going to die” and that she was unable to push Singh off her.

“The victim was begging the offender to let her go. The offender said that he would let her go after five minutes,” the court documents state.

“The offender warned the victim not to tell anybody.”

Singh then took her phone and went upstairs to get his own phone, and the woman fled through a fire exit and reported the attack at a nearby Chemist Warehouse. She then made a police report and was treated for injuries to her genitals in hospital.
