Hunt for Middle Eastern man over Melbourne Ramadan Night Market stabbing

Police in Melbourne are investigating after a man was stabbed during a fight involving up to 10 Middle Eastern men at thecity’s inaugural Ramadan Night Market last month.

Victoria Police said a 28-year-old man was taken to hospital with stab wounds at about 11.30pm on April 2 after an altercation on Thomas Street, Dandenong.

The offender fled the scene afterwards, and police said up to 10 men, of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean in appearance and between 18 and 20-years-old, were involved.

“The main offender has been described as having dark hair, a beard, and approximately 20-years-old and wearing Nike t-shirt and blue jacket,” police said.

“Investigators have released an image and CCTV and images of a man they believe might be able to assist with their enquiries.

“Additionally, investigators are also keen to speak with persons who were in the area at the time and who may have witnessed the altercation.”

The market attracted 30,000 people per night over Ramadan, and was inspired by the long-running Ramadan Night Market in the Muslim-dominated Sydney suburb of Lakemba, an event that draws a million and half visitors annually.
