The 18-year-old was seated outside the Vanilla Lounge at Eaton Mall in Oakleigh at when he was attacked by the gang of at least 10 males at about 7.45pm on Friday.
A video of the incident shows diners running for cover and hiding behind tables as the attack unfolds, while the man filming says: “He’s got a knife, he’s got a knife. Oh my days. He’s got a f**king machete bro.”

One of the males can be wielding a long machete as other members of the gang appear to kick and punch another man who is curled up on the ground.
Victoria Police said the gang fled the scene on foot, and the victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A worker at a nearby venue told the Herald Sun they saw about 150 people “running in fear” all at once.
“Vanilla was full of people and everyone was sitting down. A group of about 10 kids and teenagers then showed up in masks and argued with this guy,” the witness said.
“Suddenly one of the guys pulled out a machete and stabbed the guy across the face from the neck to the cheek.”
“They were kids, they seemed really young.”
Another witness told Neos Kosmos the gang were “not known or common to the area”, and turned up wearing ski masks before provoking another group of young people and then leaving the area.
A short time later they returned and a brawl erupted, the witness said.
Victoria Police recently admitted there are dozens of warring gangs with hundreds of members across Melbourne, many of them made up of African teenagers, after claiming for years that the didn’t exist, and hiding the nationality of criminal offenders from the public in official statistics beginning in 2018.
