A Good Samaritan has had her car stolen and written off after pulling over to help at the scene of an accident in Melbourne.
Sammie Petrevski and her partner were driving home in their red HSV Clubsport at about 9.30 on Thursday night when she saw an SUV flipped onto its side on Donnybrook Road, Donnybrook.
She said locals who had come out of their houses waved them down, and fearing there may have been kids inside, stopped to assist, put on her hazard lights, and got out, she told the Herald Sun.
But then she saw a man of African appearance, who she suspects was drug affected, get out of the crashed vehicle and say “whose red car is that?” before jumping behind the wheel and driving off.
“I’m screaming like a crazy woman, running in my pyjamas and flip-flops. I’m like ‘stop, stop, no, stop, stop’,” Ms Petrevski said.
She and her partner then got in the car of another witness and drove after the thief, only to find that he had lost control over a median strip and damaged the vehicle.
“We thought he must have crashed to a stop right there, but then we followed the oil and transmission fluid trail into the nearby estate, where he finally realised the motor was blown and he wasn’t going anywhere,” she said.
They then saw the man getting out of her car and running away, and her partner briefly chased him before thinking better of it.
Ms Petrevski said that to make matters worse, “he runs off with our McDonald’s”, and her car has been impounded by police, forcing her to wait until she can retrieve her belongings, including children’s prams.
She shared images of a man she is hoping to identify on a local Facebook page, along with a photo of the crash scene.
“If anyone has any footage of this man and can pass on this footage over to me or the police this would be great,” she wrote.
“He is still on the run so any information will help. I know the picture is blurry but this is what he looks like.”
