New Zealanders have been left in disbelief after discovering an Indian retailer is selling cow dung and urine for hundreds of dollars.
Influential X user Holyhekatuiteka shared examples of bottles of “pure and fresh” cow urine, handmade dung cakes, and powdered cow dung ash for babies on Thursday in a post taking aim at Prime Minister Christopher Luxon for his recently concluded Free Trade Agreement with India.
The products are all for sale on US-based Indian online shopping platform Navafresh, which has offices in Auckland and Sydney, and are described as being for Hindu rituals, traditional Indian medicine, or burning.
The cow dung baby powder is selling for $214 for 250 grams, and is described as giving “spiritual power”, and protection from ill health and negative thoughts, while the sun-dried cow dung cakes are $220.33 per kilo and are advertised as “ideal for use in cultural practices, outdoor cooking, or as a sustainable fuel source”.
The cow urine is on sale for $253.18 for two litres, and is “full of health benefits”, according to Navafresh, which promises it is collected and packed on the day of order from a desi cow calf, and describes it as “the most competent disinfectant”, and a “powerful antibiotic and amazing germicide” for use in “cow urine therapy”.
Another brand for sale says the cow urine can be used as an “immunity booster”, in religious Pooja rituals, and to “kill bacteria and fungals in bathing water”.

“Come on Luxon, once the FTA kicks in our dung cakes, cow piss and dung powder for our babies better come down in price!” Holyhekatuiteka wrote along with a picture of Mr Luxon wearing a bizarre Indian headdress.
“This is third world GARBAGE.”
The post also sparked outrage from other New Zealanders, with many expressing shock that the product listings were real, and calling them “disgusting”.
“Jeebus, I was joking yesterday when I said farmers should be tapping the new market and collecting cow urine for our new consumers!” said one.
“Why are Indians importing cow piss into New Zealand? If they are going to drink cow urine, they should drink fresh NZ cow urine,” said another.
“We used to be a serious country,” a third wrote.
As part of the FTA New Zealand signed an annex to facilitate trade in ayurveda Indian traditional medicine and yoga, which India said “reinforces India’s position as a global hub for health, wellness, and traditional medicine services”.
Last year the government of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where much of the Navafresh cow urine is sourced, launched an initiative to use cow-urine-based products for 19 diseases including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, skin conditions, asthma, and sinusitis.
A 2023 study by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) found that drinking cow urine was significantly harmful to human health due to bacteria levels.
The cow dung sale revelations come just days after Navafresh was forced to recall a joint pain supplement called Rheumacare by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) due to high levels of lead, following a warning in November for selling “unapproved new drugs” and “misbranding violations”.
