A 13-year-old girl has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing another female Chinese student to death near Newcastle.
NSW Police said officers were called to a home in Edgeworth, Lake Macquarie, where both exchange students were staying with a couple in their 50s, at about 10.20pm on Monday night and found a female teenager, believed to be aged 14, in a guest bedroom with an alleged stab wound to her torso.
The injured teenager treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she later died, while the 13-year-old was arrested at the scene and taken to Toronto Police Station.
A kitchen knife was seized from the home for forensic examination.
Lake Macquarie police district commander Superintendent Tracy Chapman said both girls were Chinese nationals who had arrived in Australia eight days ago as part of the same program, were not related, and were supposed to stay in the country until August 16.
“What I can confirm is the two young girls were at that location where they’re staying with their hosts. All parties had retired to their rooms for the evening,” she said.
“One of the hosts heard a commotion of some sort, and when she went to investigate, she located the 14 year old with a wound.”
The 13-year-old, who cannot be named because of her age, was refused bail and will appear in a children’s court on Wednesday.
