A woman has been attacked while walking through a popular national park on the Gold Coast on the weekend, sparking a massive manhunt.
The 19-year-old victim was walking along a headland in Burleigh Heads National Park at about 3.35pm on Sunday when she was grabbed from behind by a man who then tried to assault her, police said.
Queensland Police Chief Superintendent Kylie Rigg said a struggle then took place and the woman managed to fight off the attacker, who police described as “having a dark complexion, short hair, wearing a dark green singlet and dark coloured pants”.
The man fled on foot, and the woman did not suffer any serious injuries.
“It is concerning that this assault happened in a busy area where our community frequent very often for the purpose of exercise, getting out and about in our national park,” Superintendent Rigg said.
“Police mobilised all our resources, including our chopper, that was up overhead very quickly to try and identify this male. If you are aware of who this person is, please contact police.”
The investigation is still underway and police are appealing for public assistance to identify the man.
