Hunt for Asian rapist who ambushed an elderly woman, 85, in an elevator in Melbourne

Hunt for Asian rapist Melbourne

Victoria Police are investigating the sickening sexual assault of an elderly woman in Melbourne last month.

The rapist, described as Asian in appearance, waited for the woman, 85, who was using a walker, to enter a lift in an apartment building on Simmons St, South Yarra, at about 2pm on April 1, before exposing himself to her, investigators said.

He then followed her to another floor and sexually assaulted her, and fled the scene on foot, according to police.

Bayside Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives said the man is perceived to be of Asian appearance, in his mid-20s, and about 180cm tall with short shaved black hair and unkempt facial hair.

He was last seen wearing a black hooded jumper with the word “Jordan” written on the back along with black pants and black sneakers.

Detective Senior Constable Andrew Turton said police were particularly concerned by the length of time the sex predator waited for his victim – 45 minutes – as it suggested the crime was premeditated rather than opportunistic.

He said the man propositioned the 85-year-old for a sexual act, and then offered money to her before sexually assaulting her. He got out of the lift on level 10, only to reappear on level 11 when the woman got out, and sexually assaulted her again.

The woman told TV reporters on Wednesday that she fought back using her walker, only for him to say “I come back and kill you”, leave her frightened for her safety.

“It’s a monstrous concern to us,” Det Sen Const Turton said.

Police released footage of a man they believe may be able to assist with enquiries.
