Dramatic arrests as African alleged drug gang smashed by police

Eight men have been charged after police smashed an alleged “dial-a-dealer” drug gang operating on the border of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

Dramatic footage shows three African men being dragged out of their cars in the Queanbeyan area on Thursday by heavily armed officers from the NSW Police Southern Operational Support Group, assisted by ACT Policing.

An 18-year-old man was Tasered while being arrested in a car park in Jerrabomberra at 12.30pm on Thursday, while two other men aged 18 and 20 were apprehended in a car in Queanbeyan at about 1.50pm.

Police allegedly seized $4,000, cannabis, 43 MDMA capsules, two mobile phones and white powder during the first arrest, and $25,000 cash and 176 grams of cocaine during the second.

Crude homemade firearms, ammunition, cash and drugs were also allegedly seized during searches of two properties in Harrison and O’Connor in the ACT, police said.

The man, 18, arrested in Jerrabomberra was charged with 19 offences including “supply prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis”, “prohibited drugs” and “custody of a knife in public place”.

The other 18-year-old was charged with “take part supply prohibited drug greater than indictable and less than commercial”, “supply prohibited drug less than or equal to small quantity” and “possess prohibited drug”.

The 20-year-old man was charged with five offences, including two counts of “supply prohibited drug great than indictable and less than commercial quantity”, “recklessly deal with proceeds of crime over $5,000” and two counts of “possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit”.

All three were refused police bail.

Police said Strike Force Torlin was established in September last year to investigate the supply of illegal drugs in the cross border region, and the arrests were made with the assistance of the Southern Domestic Violence High Risk Offenders Team, Monaro Police District, and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.
