An Afghan man is facing 25 years behind bars after allegedly trying to smuggle heroin into Australia in his suitcase.
The 47-year-old, who also has Australia citizenship, was selected for a full baggage examination at Adelaide Airport, due to “intelligence-led screening and officer intuition” after getting off a flight from overseas on Wednesday, the Australian Border Force (ABF) said.
ABF officers then allegedly spotted a black fluid oozing from the handle of the man’s suitcase, and 500g of a substance that returned a positive result for heroin on a presumptive test was removed from the handle.
The man was then charged with one count of importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled substance, which carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail.
He will face court again on September 23.
