African woman, 25, allegedly stabs female friend to death in Adelaide

An African woman has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing her female friend to death at a public housing block in Adelaide.

Police allege Ghanian mother-of-three Maria Mpawenimana, 25, fatally stabbed Talulah Koopman, 28, in the chest at a unit in Elizabeth East on Thursday evening.

Ms Koopman was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital but could not be saved, and Mpawenimana was arrested at the scene.

The accused faced Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday where she did not apply for bail and the prosecution said forensic toxicology reports would take five months to complete, The Advertiser reported.

She will face court again in November.

Neighbours told 7 News the Housing Trust unit-lined street was plagued with crime and violence, and that they had made numerous complaints about excessive drinking and screaming.

Kerry Greening said she called police after hearing screaming and yelling, but that it was “like that every night”.

“There’s been home invasions, there’s been bashings, there was an ambulance there last week picking someone up,” she said.

Another neighbour, Issach Sube, said he was shocked by Ms Koopman’s death, and that the two women did not live on the street but often came to visit a mutual friend.
