An aboriginal man is behind bars after allegedly mimicking firing a gun from the Bondi pedestrian bridge where two Muslim terrorists carried out their attack.
Bricklayer Zayne McMillan, 22, was refused bail on Thursday after appearing in Sydney’s Bail Division Court charged with two counts of stalk/intimidate intending to cause fear of physical harm and three counts of behaving in an offensive manner in a public place.
Police allege McMillan pretended to fire at people from the bridge at about 7pm on Saturday evening and then abused bystanders who confronted him, causing them to feel fearful and intimidated, and arrested him in Coogee on Wednesday.
McMillan’s lawyer Glen Cremer argued his client should be given bail as spending time on remand would perpetuate his disadvantage as an indigenous man, and the court heard he is the primary carer for his mother, who suffers from a psychotic condition, 9News reported.
Prosecutors opposed bail, noting McMillan was on parole at the time after being imprisoned for crimes including weapons offences, and Magistrate Karen Stafford said the case against the accused appeared strong and dismissed the bail application.
“He’s on parole for some very serious offences of violence … this would appear to be a repetition of violent offending,” she said.
McMillan will appear in court again on February 10.
Police received complaints about two alleged offenders, but only McMillan has been arrested.
