An Irishman has been jailed for two years for “inciting hatred” over an Instagram livestream where he said refugees were “here to rape women and children” and referred to them a “rape-fugees”.
Graham Carey, a 42-year-old truck driver from Finglas, Dublin, made the 30-minute video on January 30, 2023, after a local woman’s allegations that she was sexually assaulted by a refugee led to days of anti-immigration protests.
In his video Carey said the government was “rewarding evil” by allowing “rape-ugees” into the country “in order that they can rape our people”, and “putting your daughters on the f**king menu for them”, RTE reported.
“Our own people are going to be raped by them. These are not refugees. We are going to get these f**king rapists out of here,” he said.
“Get back to where you came from. Get the f**k out of here before you die on this island. If you refuse to get the f**k out of here, you’re going to die on the island and we’ll f**k your bleeding corpse into the sea.”
He also encouraged protesters to gather outside the police station in Finglas.
During the unrest police labelled claims the perpetrator was a refugee “misinformation and disinformation” and said they were looking for a White male, but never made any arrests, and the identity and nationality of the perpetrator remains unknown.
Carey was later arrested and charged with “using words that were threatening, abusive and insulting, and intended to or likely to stir up hatred”, and “distribution of recordings of images or sound likely to stir up hatred”.
He fought the charges, but was found guilty by a jury in April, and on Thursday was sentenced by Justice Patricia Ryan, who called the offending serious, planned, and premeditated, but took into account his admissions to police and excellent work history.
She sentenced him to 18 months’ imprisonment for each offence, to run consecutively, but suspended the final year of the sentence.
Mr Carey refused to enter the dock, and said his life was going to be in danger in prison as he was led out of court.
