An Indian-born doctor has applied for bail after being charged with allegedly raping and sexually assaulting female patients at a clinic in Ipswich, Queensland.
General practitioner Dushyant Kumar Singh, who graduated from medical school in Nepal, has been behind bars since being charged earlier this month with 35 offences, including rape, sexual assault, torture, supply dangerous drugs and attempting to pervert justice.
He made a bail application on Friday, but a Supreme Court judge set aside his decision until next week and Singh will remain in custody until then.
Police allege Singh raped one woman, sexually assaulted another, and detained a woman inside his clinic in Springfield Lakes on three separate occasions, and allegedly offered a victim’s solicitor $100,000 for information, 7 News reported.
A court heard that one woman allegedly had to “physically resist” Singh, who allegedly pressured her into taking a particular type of medication.
Singh’s medical registration was suspended by Queensland’s health ombudsman on April 15, and his suspension will be in effect until it is revoked or the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal sets aside the decision.
According to an online profile, Singh previously worked in Townsville, Queensland, and Deloraine, Tasmania, and speaks Hindi, Nepalese and Punjabi.
Singh’s lawyer declined to comment to 7 News outside court.
